Edinburgh's festival season has come to an end

Find out about what's been happening across our venues during the last few busy weeks.


As August has drawn to a close, that means only one thing…the end of the world-famous Edinburgh Fringe, and what a spectacular month it has been! Festival season has been in full flow across several of our venues and it is time we look back at some of the highlights.

 


Assembly Rooms


Despite the closure of the George Street bar outside the building, Assembly Rooms was back to its best, bustling with life all throughout the month thanks to the improved West Lane Bar and a wide array of performances inside. We played host to extraordinary shows that pushed the boundaries of physical human capability, such as Afrique En Cirque and Mythos: Ragnarök, while also seeing comedy giants Julian Clary and Jack Dee sell out our biggest venues night after night. As well as this, we were also treated to a range of fantastic theatrical productions including Sunshine on Leith and Come From Away, and had our minds blown by award-winning magicians Chris Dugdale and Kevin Quantum.


All in all, it was a brilliant month at Assembly Rooms, and it looks to be an equally busy Autumnal period! Feel free to check out what shows we have coming up in the next while.






Usher Hall


Similarly to Assembly Rooms, it was a lively month at Usher Hall, as Edinburgh International Festival (EIF) ran a packed-out programme of back-to-back classical concerts. Highlights included the much-anticipated pianistic superstar, Yuja Wang, who took the audience through an exploration of the great 20th century masters of jazz piano, bringing the house down with a fabulous solo at the end. We also cannot forget the world-class Berliner Philharmoniker orchestra, who returned for the first time in 20 years, delivering two moving and incredible performances that provided a triumphant and fitting end to festival season at Usher Hall.


Despite the conclusion of EIF’s classical programme, we have a wide range of shows coming up in September and beyond.






City Art Centre


At the City Art Centre, the Sandra George exhibition formed part of the Edinburgh Art Festival and was steadily popular throughout the month. A prolific social documentary photographer and community arts worker, her pictures offer a vivid and deeply personal insight into her remarkable life and work, which spans political activism, social justice, and the joys of childhood and family.


The exhibition is open until Sunday 27 September and it is not one to miss.
