More to see and enjoy around the city!
You can easily see the big, famous monuments around the city centre, but you might need to look a bit harder to appreciate the interesting landmarks in other parts. Discover ancient stones and boundary markers, war memorials and water features, sundials and doo’cots, as well as contemporary artworks. Edinburgh's monuments tell us about the history of the city - like a museum collection in the open air.
St Bernard's Well can be found on the Water of Leith close to Stockbridge. Built in the 1790s, the monument is over 235 years old! Designed by the Scottish painter Alexander Nasmyth, it's domed ceiling is supported by 10 columns and covers a statue of Hygeia, the Greek goddess of health. Water from the mineral spring was popular for its health giving properties from the mid 18th century until the well closed in 1940!
