Sustainability
At Culture Edinburgh, we’re committed to playing our part towards building a greener, fairer future for our city. As part of The City of Edinburgh Council, we fully support the ambition to become a net zero organisation by 2030. The Council has sustainability at the heart of its long-term planning. One of its three strategic priorities is now to “Become a net zero city”, backed by key documents like the Council Emissions Reduction Plan (CERP) and the 2030 Climate Strategy.
At Culture Edinburgh, our venues are a main player within the city’s cultural sector.
We’ve developed a dedicated Culture Edinburgh Sustainability Strategy, shaped by Creative Carbon Scotland’s Green Arts Charter. It sets out six clear priorities, each backed by practical actions:
Building efficiency: we’re improving how our buildings use energy, using technology and new systems to monitor, manage and reduce consumption.
Climate change adaptation: we’re actively planning for climate change, futureproofing our buildings and services using guidance from Creative Carbon Scotland.
Leadership: we aim to be leaders in sustainability - encouraging staff, audiences, partners and suppliers to make greener choices every day.
Education and engagement: we’ll create visible, engaging ways to share our progress and involve the public in our climate journey.
Transport: we’re cutting back on business travel emissions by promoting sustainable alternatives and aligning with the Council’s City Mobility Plan 2021–2030.
Circular economy: we’re reducing waste, rolling out food waste initiatives, and adopting a “reduce, reuse, repair” mindset across all sites.
Like everyone else, we want to play our part and are doing so.
