Stockbridge Market Arch


Originally a separate village, Stockbridge is a residential and shopping area situated a mile north of Edinburgh Castle and next to the New Town and Water of Leith. The market arch is a reminder of a forgotten market over a century old. The arch hints at some of the things that used to be sold at the market: ‘Butcher meats, fruit, fish and poultry.’ Its grand, Greek Revival design echoes nearby houses and St Bernard’s Well, just a stone’s throw away.


Due to complaints from locals about the noises and smells, the market shut its doors in 1906 after running for 75 years. Housing now fills in much of the old market area. A contemporary farmer’s market takes place in nearby Saunders Street every Sunday, maintaining a link with the area’s past traditions.
