Church Hill Theatre
A people’s venue for Edinburgh
Church Hill Theatre is one of the most important non-professional performance spaces in Scotland. With a capacity of 353, the theatre welcomes amateur companies from across the city and wider region, and is an established venue for the Edinburgh Festival each summer.
Owned and managed by the Culture Edinburgh team at The City of Edinburgh Council, and on behalf of the community, Church Hill Theatre gives enthusiastic amateurs, students and up-and-coming performers access to an impressive and well-equipped performing environment. It’s also available for hire, and ideal for many kinds of business and community events including conferences, talks, lectures, music, dance and drama.
The Church Hill Theatre began its existence as Morningside High Church, designed in the late 1800s by Scottish architect Hippolyte Blanc. It was converted into a theatre in the 1960s and in the time since has become renowned as one of Scotland’s leading non-professional theatres. As well as being home to many of Edinburgh’s amateur theatrical companies, it is a popular venue for the Edinburgh International Festival.
