In the centre of the Charlotte Square gardens, Edinburgh’s Prince Albert Memorial stands as a tribute to Queen Victoria’s beloved husband. This impressive 30 feet (over 9 metres) high bronze monument, created by Sir John Steell in 1865, depicts Albert mounted on horseback in Field Marshal uniform. Unveiled in 1876, the grand memorial earned Steell a knighthood and remains one of Edinburgh's most striking Victorian monuments, complementing the Georgian architecture of Charlotte Square.

Sir John Steell (1804-1891) was responsible for a number of important statues in Edinburgh including those of Sir Walter Scott and Allan Ramsay.
